Performer, Choreographer, Instructor
Artist Statement
Speed, high energy, polyrhythms, isolations, percussive movements and hip gyrations are the components that characterize my choreography. As a product of Trinidad’s cultural dance forms and European modern dance training, I create work that fuses elements from both of these dance forms. I call this fusion vocabulary Modern Afro-Caribbean Dance.
Whether through class or performance, my Modern Afro-Caribbean dance creates a powerful avenue for expression and celebration. My vocabulary as a performer, choreographer and educator emerges from over ten years of artistic work. My creative process works to expand my Modern Afro-Caribbean vocabulary, using drumming music as my impetus for creation.
Though I employ various themes, I always arrive at the same declaration: “No one should be bound by the limits imposed on them by others or themselves”. Guided by this belief, my work constantly explores narratives that reflect struggle, strength and victory. My vision as an artist is therefore to interest the audience as well as allow the dancers the opportunity to tap into their inner strength and emotional complexity.
From the streets to the studio, dance is a practice that can lead us away from the restrictions that we willingly or subconsciously succumb to. Dance provides an integrated experience of the mind, body and spirit and encourages us to stay rooted in our bodies as we come to a deeper awareness of our strength. I invite you into this liberating experience as we enter into this world of work. Let us begin.
