African Dance Class Description
Ago (Attention)! Ever wanted to experience African rhythms in a high energy, dynamic, musical environment that values community and collaboration? Then keep reading! This three hour introductory workshop will teach two foundational West African dances from the countries of Guinea and Mali: Kou Kou and Manjane. Beginning with a brief overview of the backgrounds and purposes of these dances, we start moving from the floor up, increasing physicality as we experience the intricate relationship between dance and music present in these countries. The emphasis is on stamina, stretching, muscle tone, rhythm, coordination and basic technique. We do this through warm-up exercises, Afro-aerobic combinations and step by step across the floor progressions to prepare students to skillfully perform Manjane and Kou Kou in an informal bantaba or friendly competition at the end class. Remember to bring a lappa (African skirt) and lots of water. You will need it!
